Executive summary
The development of fabrics that provide effective protection against high-energy impacts while maintaining flexibility, breathability and ease of use has long challenged textile manufacturers. A new, silicon-based technology developed by Dow Corning Corp.—the Dow Corning Active Protection System meets this challenge.
The patented technology consists of multiple layers of spacer textile treated with a shear thickening (or dilatant) silicone composition. The material, which remains soft and flexible under normal conditions, instantly becomes rigid under high-impact force to both absorb and distribute impact energy. When the force is removed, the fabric immediately returns to a flexible state.
Initially developed for the high-performance apparel market, this revolutionary material provides superior impact protection, comfort and ease of use for the end user, and design and fabrication versatility for the product developer/manufacturer.
With its ability to harden instantly under sudden stress and then return to a flexible state, this “intelligent” textile also offers virtually unlimited application opportunities that extend far beyond the sports apparel market, including:
- industrial and geo fabrics,
- medical devices,
- architecture and construction, and
- military and civil defense.
pean Standards impact-protection requirements for sports apparel and that
the protective performance of the fabric is not affected by heat, humidity or
moisture.
This paper will describe the development of the technology, its key features and
benefits, testing results and application opportunities.
