Future growth for rubber glove sector remains resilient despite high cost

KUCHING: The demand for Malaysian made rubber gloves throughout the world remains robust, with synthetic rubber (SR) gloves consistently taking up natural rubber (NR) gloves market share.
ECM Libra Investment Sdn Bhd (ECM Libra) stated that the overall demand for rubber gloves was resilient as higher sales volume of nitrile gloves had more than offset the flat to lower sales volume of latex gloves.

It added that over the last two years, Malaysian export of rubber gloves (both NR and SR) had deteriorated by 4.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y). Malaysia’s total export of gloves was 35.6 billion pairs in 2011.
However in terms of sales value, exports rose 9.8 per cent y-o-y to RM9.4 billion largely due to higher average selling price (ASPs).

While latex-based gloves or NR gloves were still dominant as a percentage to overall exports of rubber gloves in Malaysia, the trend was moving towards SR, ECM Libra noted. In 2011, Malaysia exported 14.8 billion pairs of SR gloves, a y-o-y increase from 2009 and 2010 respectively.

In terms of value, SR exports rose 42 per cent (2009) and 106 per cent (2010) to RM3.7 billion in 2011. Meanwhile, exports of nitrile gloves in 2011 was 14.6 billion pairs (RM3.4 billion), making up 93.7 per cent of total value of SR gloves exported.
The higher demand growth for nitrile gloves was due to its superior quality and lightness (versus natural rubber gloves) as well as high latex prices which had narrowed the ASP gap between latex and nitrile-based, making the latter cheaper
