Anti-degradants are an important ingredient of rubber compounds.

Rubber compound formulations were prepared on a laboratory scale to serve as ana-lytical baselines. Although the model compounds were representative of tire tread and
tire sidewall compounds, the methods are broadly applicable to other rubber composi-tions.
Several sampling methodologies were employed to assess the anti-degradant levels in these slab stock samples.
Aged vulcanized rubber materials, harvested from the tread and sidewalls of used tires, also were analyzed.
In this specific portion of the study, attention has been focused on various sampling protocols and analytical methods suitable for reliably analyzing the anti-degradants.
One method is a rap-id surface swab method, the other a more extensive solvent extraction procedure.
