Executive summary

Imagine a material that can be added to your compound to improve processing without negatively affecting the physical properties of the final article—doesn’t that sound like a miracle?
No migration, no surface-blooming, no emissions but reduced viscosity and perfect balance of mechanical performance, the dream of every rubber compound development chemist.
Addition of silica to reduce viscosity—a fairy tale? Not if the right material is chosen—the new viscosity modifier SIDISTAR, described in this presentation.
By optimization of the balance between reinforcing fillers, like precipitated silica or carbon black, and this unique synthetic silicon dioxide with spherical primary particles of an average diameter of 150 nm, the compound viscosity can be decreased but at the same time the mechanical performance of the vulcanizate will be maintained or even improved.
This can be explained by its ability to be dispersed as primary particles in the elastomeric matrix, thus reducing internal friction and filler-filler interaction.
Properties like heat build-up and abrasion resistance are improved. The required mixing energy is reduced significantly, leading to immediate cost savings.
The new examples presented in this paper illustrate the effect of the additive and demonstrate that there virtually are no limitations for its application.
New combinations of compound properties become available, opening new or extending existing areas for the use of rubber articles.
